Communication

-An unfortunate byproduct of youth sports is conflicts that arise between young athletes or often times coaches. Emotions can run high, so keeping cool and calm is not always the easy thing to do when communicating. It is helpful to know how to diffuse conflicts that will arise.

Types of resolutions

To resolve conflicts with youth athletes, parent, or other coaches here are some important tips to remember:

  • Separate and try to calm down first
    • Fights usually occur when emotions have gotten too high. Once the parties involved are calmed down, it will be much easier to talk it out and resolve the conflict.
    • When the conflict is approached it is best to keep a neutral stance between the parties involved. Once that is accomplished, the resolution to the problem could be solved in the two ways listed below

How to Resolve

The two most commonly used approaches to conflict resolution are compromise (I get half, you get half) and Collaboration ( I get what I want, you get what you want).

  • Compromise involves agreeing to give up half of what you want in exchange for getting half of what the other person wants. Compromise is basically a positive approach, but the outcome leaves each party partially dissatisfied and partially satisfied.
  • Collaboration is an attempt to arrive at an outcome that satisfies both parties. Behaviorally, it involves confronting differences, sharing information about both parties’ concerns, and problem-solving to find a solution that satisfies both parties.
